Indianiste, védisant, grammairien et philologue, Michel Angot a travaillé en Inde et a appris auprès d'érudits (pandits) la récitation du Veda et la grammaire traditionnelle. Il a enseigné le sanskrit et la littérature sanskrite à l’université de Nanterre (Paris-X puis à l’Inalco. Membre du Centre d’études de l’Inde et de l’Asie du Sud (CEIAS), il anime un séminaire sur la notion de délivrance dans les philosophies brahmaniques et bouddhistes à l’EHESS.
